I can remember when I was younger that people would say, “Pray about it and see what God says”, but I would think, how do I know what God is saying? I had never heard him speak to me. Usually, he doesn’t speak out loud like he did in the bible days or at least I have never heard him speak like that. So, how was I suppose to hear him? It wasn’t until I developed a closer relationship with him that I was able to hear him speak to me. God speaks to us, we just don’t know how to listen. So, how do you know when God is speaking to you? Here are some ways to help listen for God’s voice.
Praying is so important to grow closer to God. When you make friends with someone and they become your best friend, you had to talk to them to grow in your friendship. Well, it is so important to talk with God and tell him everything. Tell him how much you love him, your fears, what your thankful for, what you need, ask for forgiveness and ask for his help. He wants to be your father and best friend. He wants to be the one you turn to when you are hurting or even when you are excited about something and want to share the good news. And he is always there and always listens!
When I would pray, I would ask for him to speak to my heart and open my ears to hear him. Pray all the time. Not just once a day! Pray several times a day. He doesn’t just want to hear from you once a day. He wants to hear from you all the time. Make it a habit to say small prayers throughout your day about how you are thankful for different things like your kids, house, job, church family, etc. Pray without ceasing-1 Thessalonian 5:17
Reading the bible is another way to know what God is saying because it is his word. Reading the bible every day is so important. How are you going to know how to live your life as God wants you too, if you do not read or understand the bible. In order to develop a relationship with God, you need to know everything about him. Sometimes, when I read the bible, I hear him speak to me through the verses, especially when I am doing something opposite of what the bible tells me to do.
Make reading the bible a daily part of your walk with God and meditate on how you can apply that in your life. I like to read early in the morning and do a bible study as well. After you read, look up the commentaries on the verses you read to get a different perspective on it. It might be totally different than what you were thinking. I also love devotionals! Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God [is] quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
Your inner voice
Sometimes, we here God through that little voice in our head that tells us to do or not do something. That inner voice is the Spirit living inside of us. Sometimes, if I think I can do something on my own will, that inner voice will tell me I need God to help me. Listen to that inner voice, because if it is telling you to do or not do something, then it is more than likely right.
But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come- John 16:13
Sometimes, God speaks to us through circumstances! (Loss of a job, not getting a job offer, missed a flight) Sometimes, we want something really bad, but it is not God’s will. At the time, we get upset at what happened, but later on we realize that God had a plan and a purpose and everything turned out better.
I had a banking career that I absolutely loved and was trying to advance to bank manager. I applied a couple of times and even interviewed for it and was told that I would need a degree. I was so upset because I knew there were other managers that didn’t have a degree and advanced based on experience. I was so upset at the time, but with that career ending, it lead me into my nursing career I have now. I was actually blessed in the long run. I make better pay for my family and I love what I do.
Or what about that person that missed a flight and the plane ended up crashing. This could have been a divine intervention from God.
We don’t always understand why things happen at the time, but if you will wait, God will show you why the situation happened and it is usually for the better.
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28)
Through other people
God speaks to us through other people. This could be our pastor preaching to us or a friendly phone call from someone that speaks to our heart.
I can’t tell you how many times I felt God talking to me during a sermon at church. I felt like the only one in the room and he was directly talking to me. I know it was his way of talking to me.
Have you ever felt out of the blue that you should call someone? A dear friend of mine shared with me, that she was listening to a song and it made her think of a friend that had recently lost her husband. She decided to call her that day and when she spoke with her, it was what she needed to hear because it was her husband’s birthday and she was having a hard day.
That my friend is God talking to us through other people.
So if anyone purifies himself from anything dishonorable, he will be a special instrument, set apart, useful to the Master, prepared for every good work- 2 Timothy 2:21
God knows how to talk to us. We just need to be able to search and listen for him. He can communicate in so many ways to get our attention. If you are not seeking him, you will miss his message. Grow in your relationship with him and he will guide you!
Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me- Revelation 3:20
